Yonder Stories for Homebound Hearts

More than a Fish Kill

National Museum of Australia  | 2024
Writer, Director, Editor

More than a Fish Kill explores how artists, fisheries managers and First Nations custodians came together in the aftermath of devastating fish kills along the Barka/Baaka (Darling River) and turned these ecological disasters into catalysts for cultural connection and revival. The film tells the story of a remarkable collaboration that interweaves art, science and ancient knowledge to care for communities, honour our rivers and reshape how we live, now and into the future.

The film will be made accessible to the public later in the year.

The Cod and the Economy

This Is Water | Episode 2
Video | Production | Editing (With Dan Schulz)

In January 2019, Menindee faced an ecological crisis when hundreds of thousands of fish, including the iconic Murray Cod, died in the Darling-Baaka River. This episode follows local volunteers as they rescue surviving fish under the guidance of NSW Department of Primary Industries. Dr. Paul Sinclair highlights the Murray Cod's role in connecting people to the river and how financial systems prioritize irrigation at the expense of river health. The episode explores how the fish kill galvanized community action, underscoring the urgent need to address the ecological imbalance in the river system.
