BARKANDJI man Derek Hardman announced his candidacy for the Federal seat of Parkes in NSW this week. Mr Hardman will be running as a representative of the Indigenous Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA) which was officially accepted by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) late last year.

Mr Hardman said that this is the beginning of setting thefoundations for First Nations People to have a voice and place within the decision-making arena of parliament and to influence and make changes to critical issues that affect all Australians. “We are not here to just run in
this one election, we are here, and we are staying here as a political
party, and we are going to keep building on it,” he said. Mr Hardman who has been involved in the IAPA since its formation in late 2020, said that the party was formed in response to First Nations people not being heard about critical issues that affected the livelihood of people in his communities.
